5  is a low mileage maiden from this year’s leading yard of John Size that ran a career best last time when runner-up over course & trip having met with market support. He was less than a length behind the winner that day, who was landing back-to-back wins and looks well above average.  You wouldn’t say he was a luckless loser, but you could probably tact a bit on given he was a tad tight for room in the straight. The handicapper has nudged him up 1lb for that, but he once again has a favourable draw, and connections will be hoping first time blinkers bring out further improvement.

Circuit Mighty goes from the top of the handicap but that was the same scenario last time when only beaten a lip over course & trip with the first two pulling well clear of the rest.  The winner of that race has partly franked the form when narrowly beaten at a level above this at his next start. That was the selections first spin at this level and although his last win was just over two-years ago, he certainly looks to be on a more than workable mark at a level he’ll find a bit more to his liking. He does draw toward the outside, and he normally stalks the speed, but they do have a decent run to the first turn over this trip.

Fun Togather has bounced back to form recently, finishing with the silver two back before a strong win over course & trip last time out. The handicapper has put him up 7lb for that, but he strung together course &n trip a three-timer last season, with two of those wins coming from higher marks than his current assessment, so we know when he’s on song this is within his scope. To be fair, he did have a gun run in behind the leaders last time, but from the low draw, he should once again have all the favours.

6 Califonia Moxie,  who has been in great heart of late, won back-to-back races over this trip at Happy Valley before and equally good performance when third last time. On that occasion he had a tough trip planted wide without cover from 1000m out, before a bumping duel with a rival down the straight, to finish third, and although once again drawn high, they run the length of the back straight before meeting the first turn over this trip, and that should give Bowman plenty of time to slot in. The one concern is that both wins have been at Happy Valley, and he has had a few goes around here without winning, however, he looks a more complete article now, and that has seemingly coincided with them deciding that his best trip is the mile.

World Hero has had just the three runs at Sha Tin since February with his form figures during that time reading 1-1-2. He was runner-up over course & trip last time from a high draw behind a winning favourite, but well clear of the others, and although the winner & third have not subsequently been seen, the fourth has since come out and won. The David Hayes 3yo usually likes to punch forward and although he has a middle draw, he’s better drawn than the other likely pace-runner (Do Your Part) and should be able to leads or be right there without having to spend any pennies.

Bulb General has had just the one start which was back in January when he was third over course & trip, and he makes his return after a colic setback. However, although he was unwanted in the market on debut, he caught the eye when rattling from last on the bend, coming widest of all to finish in behind a fellow debutant that has since come out and won twice, including at a level above this. Further franking the form, both the second & fourth came out and won not long afterwards. A lot will depend on if he’s ready for a first up tilt, and the market will be a strong indicator, but he’s been tuned up for this with four recent trials, one of which he won, and the booking of Purton for the first time looks a clue.

Massive Sovereign, who was a twice winner (known as Broadhurst)) for Aidan O’Brien, won last year’s Derby at just his second local start, but then disappointed in three subsequent runs, the most recent which was last November.  The selection makes his return very late in the season and will be having his first start for David Eustace, a trainer that has had a few good results with ones he’s picked up from other yards. The selection has won twice when first up, including an impressive performance at the Curragh on his last start for O’Brien, thus if anything, the first-up scenario could be more a positive than otherwise. The son of No Nay Never will be having his first try over this trip, but both his wins in Ireland were over 7 furlongs, and he arrives having won a recent trial.

11 Mister Dapper has taken big strides forward since joining David Eustace, winning three of his six starts and will be looking to land a course & trip three-timer. The selection will be moving up in grade under a 6lb penalty and he does have more on his plate at this level. However, the form from his last race has plenty of shape with both the second & third subsequent winner’s and whilst he does dive into deeper waters, he carries a massive 17lb less at this level, and from the good draw, he should give this a decent shake.

Little Paradise won his first two races over course & trip but lost his undefeated record when unplaced at his first try at this level when last seen. However, I doubt it had as much to do with moving up in grade as it did with the fact he was a tad tardy out of the gates and then was flattened by a rival, with the selection doing well to finish sixth, just over three-lengths behind the winner. The Jimmy Ting inmate is a big 3yo weighing in at 1226lbs, and those types improve with racing, and from the low draw, provided he breaks cleanly he should be able to box seat in behind the likely leader, Wonderstar, with the gun run.

4 South Star is a low mileage 3yo with scope for further improvement that won back-to-back races over course & trip before placing behind two smart types at his next start and then was last seen when beaten two-lengths in fifth but would have finished closer if for not being tight for room a couple of times. This is a wide-open contest, and these sorts of races are usually won by one that has a smooth commute, which the selection, who normally sits handy, should be able to do from the low draw.
